Through our Water Heater Upgrade Program, you can receive a $50 monthly credit on your electric bill for two years when you switch to a clean, efficient water heater.
why upgrade to a Heat Pump?
Modernize Your Home: Heat Pump technology is more efficient than gas-fired appliances and featured in most new homes. This breakthrough technology is especially well-suited for our mild San Francisco climate.
Reduce exposure to pollution and fire risk: Gas-fired appliances can release harmful pollutants into your home. Gas is highly flammable, posing a health and safety hazard, especially in case of an earthquake or fire.
For the Climate: Reducing and eliminating gas use is one of the most important actions you can take to combat climate change as residential and commercial gas usage comprises more than one-third of San Francisco’s greenhouse gas emissions.
How Heat Pumps Work

Heat pumps work by moving heat rather than burning fuel. For water heaters, a heat pump water heater absorbs heat from the surrounding air and transfers that into your hot water tank. Due to this fundamentally different approach, heat pump water heaters are up to seven times more efficient than a typical gas-fired tank water heater. Heat Pump Water Heaters also help customers avoid using energy during expensive peak hours by heating it during off-peak times and storing it until it is needed.
How the Program Works
Our new Water Heater Upgrade Program will reward you with two years of $50 monthly bill credits after you’ve upgraded your existing water heater and enrolled your new water heater into a load shifting program.

Eligibility
To be eligible for the Water Heater Upgrade Program, customers must meet the following requirements:
Be a residential customer of CleanPowerSF.
Replace an existing water heater with an eligible heat pump water heater (see below).
Enroll your new water heater in an eligible load shift program such as WatterSaver.
Comply with the permit requirements of the Department of Building Inspection.
Eligible Water Heaters
Equipment must be a Heat Pump Water Heater that meets the following requirements:
ENERGYSTAR® Certified Heat Pump Water Heater.
Minimum UEF of 3.3 or greater.
Grid-Enabled & enrolled in an eligible load shifting program such as WatterSaver.
Installed equipment must be new (cannot be refurbished, leased, or previously installed).
